In Your Open Face, Piper Inn

The Piper Inn is one of my new favorite places.  It’s close to my house and it feels like I’m back in Belleville, IL.

To be honest, the menu at the Piper Inn makes absolutely no sense.  The have your normal bar fare, but then also have a heave dose of Cantonese, Egg Foo Young, Moo Goo Gai Pan and Chow Mein.  But that stuff isn’t for me.  I stick with the more traditional stuff – like and Open Faced Turkey Sandwich.

The first thing you’ll probably notice here is the plate.  I’m not sure if that is an Asian or Mexican design, but I like it.  I thought it made my dining experience all the more enjoyable.  The second thing you’ll notice is gravy.  Gravy is WAY underrated in this crazy, topsy turvy place we call the USA. Why did mustard, ketchup and mayonnaise emerge as mainstream condiments and gravy get left behind?  I would like to see gravy on more food.

The last, and probably most important thing you’ll notice is the Turkey.  I think it came straight out of a Jennie-O plastic package, but it was still pretty good.  Especially paired with those crinkly cur french fries.

Contrary to Popular Belief, Boston Market is Still Open for Business

I got home from a long trip today.  I could have grabbed a bite to eat at Denver International Airport, but I wanted to hold off for a good lunch.  So where did I go?

Boston Market, of course!

“Boston Market is still in business?” you ask.  Yes they are, actually.  And yes, they seemingly close down locations on a daily basis, but yes, they are still have a few locations that remain open.  Here in Denver, I think we’re down to one.

But let me tell you something, mister: I like Boston Market.  The Turkey Sandwich with corn and mashed p’taters is a strong meal.  I really don’t understand why Boston Market has so much trouble making a go of it.  I’ve talked about how boring it is to eat at a Boston Market on this blog before, but their food is pretty damn good.  If I didn’t love Turkey Sandwiches so much, I could easily make a meal out of their sides.

And don’t even get me started on the cornbread!  Ok, I’ve had better cornbread, but don’t hate the player (Boston Market) hate the game (cornbread).  Whatever the hell that means.

Anyway – get out there and support your local Boston Market.  You never know when they’re going to board up the windows.

Itching for an Open-faced Turkey Sandwich at May’s Crabs

The open-faced sandwich.  It’s a forgotten art, really.  They only have open-faced sanwiches at “old-timey” type places like May’s Crabs in Frederick, MD.  May’s is one of those places that has paper placemats with advertising for the local real estate agent and chiropractors.  They also have corn on the cob on the menu.  I seriously saw someone with a plate of five cobs of corn in front of them.

Back to the sandwich:  This mother fucker was SALTY.  I’m not one to be afraid of a little gravy and I seriously had to scrape a lot of it off.  But it was real turkey and still pretty damn tasty.

By the way, speaking of crabs – my friend Chuck had crabs in college.  He used to get a lot of tail, but he got himself in a little bit of trouble when he banged this hot chick that randmly showed up to some of our parties.  I’ve never had crabs, but he always said it was worth it.  So she was either really hot or crabs aren’t all that bad.
